Good oral hygiene starts at home. Learn the top habits that keep your teeth and gums healthy between dental appointments.
Why Home Care Matters as Much as Your Checkup
Your twice-yearly dental checkup is essential — but what happens between visits determines just as much about your oral health. Daily choices around brushing, flossing, and diet directly affect how quickly plaque builds up, how healthy your gums stay, and whether your next appointment ends with a clean bill of health or a treatment plan.
Here are five habits that Dr. Irena Shuster recommends to every patient at our clinic in Haifa.
1. Brush for Two Full Minutes, Twice a Day
Most people underestimate how long two minutes actually feels. Use a timer on your phone or an electric brush with a built-in indicator. Hold the bristles at a 45° angle toward the gumline and use small circular motions rather than aggressive back-and-forth scrubbing — the gentler technique removes plaque without wearing away enamel or irritating the gums.
Replace your toothbrush or brush head every three months, or sooner if the bristles fan out. Worn bristles are significantly less effective and can actually harbour bacteria.
2. Floss Every Single Day
Brushing cleans only about 60% of each tooth's surface. The tight spaces between teeth are where cavities and gum disease most commonly begin — and only floss or an interdental brush can reach them. Once a day is enough; the key is consistency, not perfection.
If string floss feels awkward, try floss picks or a water flosser. Patients with braces, crowns, or bridges often find a water flosser easier to use and equally effective at clearing debris and reducing plaque.
3. Always Use Fluoride Toothpaste
Fluoride is the most evidence-backed ingredient for preventing tooth decay. It strengthens enamel by remineralising microscopic weak spots before they develop into cavities — this benefit applies to adults and children alike. Look for a toothpaste with at least 1,000 ppm fluoride (standard adult formulas contain 1,450 ppm).
Whitening toothpastes are generally safe for daily use, but if you have sensitive teeth, choose one formulated with potassium nitrate or stannous fluoride. These compounds help block the nerve signals responsible for sensitivity.
4. Watch What You Drink
Sugary and acidic drinks — fizzy drinks, fruit juices, sports drinks, and even flavoured sparkling water — repeatedly bathe your teeth in acid that softens enamel. Even "diet" or "zero-sugar" versions are often highly acidic. Water and plain milk are the only beverages that pose no risk to tooth enamel.
When you do drink something acidic, use a straw to minimise contact with your teeth, and wait at least 30 minutes before brushing. Brushing immediately after acid exposure can spread the temporarily softened enamel layer.
5. Keep Every Scheduled Checkup
Even with perfect home care, professional cleaning removes tartar — calcified plaque that no toothbrush can dislodge. Regular checkups also allow problems to be caught early: a small cavity treated today costs a fraction of the root canal or crown that the same tooth might need if left untreated for another year.
At Shuster Dent, we recommend checkups every six months for most patients. Those with a higher cavity risk, active gum disease, or diabetes benefit from visits every three to four months. Ask us what schedule is right for you.
Small Habits, Lasting Results
None of these habits requires expensive equipment or a big time commitment. Consistent brushing, daily flossing, fluoride toothpaste, mindful drink choices, and regular visits — that is the straightforward formula for keeping your smile healthy for life.
